Special attention is paid to cleanliness especially in central government offices, railway stations and public places. Since 2014, the Government of India, in partnership with UNICEF, has made significant progress in reaching the goal of becoming open defecation free.
In the year 2014, the Government of India started the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. As of January 2020, 706 districts and 603,175 villages in 36 states and union territories have been declared open defecation free.
