Joao Cancelo, the right back for FC Barcelona, has been ruled out for an unspecified period of time due to a ligament strain he sustained during the match against Las Palmas on Thursday, 4 January. Cancelo holds a crucial role in the Barca team as one of their key players.
Joao Cancelo, the right-back for FC Barcelona, has unfortunately sustained a ligament injury during a match against Las Palmas. As a result, he has been sidelined for an indefinite period of time. Cancelo, who is considered one of the key players in Xavi’s team, will be greatly missed on the field. FC Barcelona officially announced the details of Cancelo’s injury in a press release on Friday, 5 January. According to the statement, tests conducted on Friday revealed that Cancelo has strained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee. As a result, he will not be available for selection until his recovery progresses.
The match against Las Palmas saw the Portuguese defender commencing the game, however, he was compelled to leave the field after a mere 11 minutes.
Since his arrival at Barça during the summer, Cancelo has participated in a total of 22 matches as a Blaugrana, with 16 of them being in La Liga and the remaining six in the Champions League. During this time, he has managed to score three goals and provide two assists.
Unfortunately, Cancelo’s injury has dealt a significant blow to FC Barcelona, as he has proven to be one of the standout players in Xavi’s system. His exceptional dribbling skills and astute game reading have set him apart from the rest of the Barcelona squad.
Regrettably, the Portugal international’s time on the field was cut short, lasting only 11 minutes in the game before being substituted by Andreas Christensen. Despite his efforts to continue playing, Cancelo was unable to do so on Thursday, 4 January.
The injury occurred during a collision with Maximo Perrone from the opposing team. Although Cancelo attempted to carry on after having his leg strapped, he ultimately fell down once again and had to be assisted off the pitch by Raphinha.
