South Korea advances to the semifinals of the AFC Asian Cup as Son Heung-min secures victory against Australia with an extra-time goal…..
South Korea staged a remarkable comeback after conceding an early goal to defeat Australia 2-1 in the AFC Asian Cup on Friday. This victory secured their place in the tournament’s first semifinal match against Jordan, who had previously defeated Tajikistan 1-0.

Australia took the lead thanks to a rebound goal from Craig Goodwin just before half-time. Goodwin fired a powerful volley into the bottom corner after receiving a cross from Nathaniel Atkinson, making up for a missed shot earlier in the match.

South Korea faced a tense moment early in the second half when goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-Woo made two crucial saves to deny Martin Boyle’s attempts on goal. Mitchell Duke’s subsequent volley from the rebound went over the bar, providing a sigh of relief for the South Korean team.

To turn the tide in their favor, South Korean captain Son Heung-min was positioned further forward following a tactical adjustment by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Son won a penalty after being fouled in the box by Lewis Miller. This game-changing opportunity proved to be crucial for South Korea.

Overall, South Korea’s resilience and Son Heung-min’s heroics secured their victory, setting the stage for an exciting semifinal clash with Jordan.

Hwang Hee-chan, the forward for Wolverhampton Wanderers, skillfully placed the ball into the top corner, forcing the match into extra time. It was during this additional period that his team sought vengeance against Australia, who had defeated them in the 2015 final to claim their first Asian Cup trophy.

In the 102nd minute, Miller committed another foul, this time obstructing Hwang. As a result, South Korea was granted a freekick right on the edge of the penalty area, which Son successfully converted into a goal.

Australia faced another setback when they were reduced to 10 players after Aiden O’Neill was shown a red card following a review by the video assistant referee for a foul on Hwang in the second half of extra time.

South Korea’s previous triumph in this event occurred 64 years ago, and they were also victorious in the inaugural edition in 1956. Driven by a strong desire to reclaim the title, they have now moved closer to achieving victory.

Reflecting on the past, Son remarked, “Although the 2015 defeat was painful, I wouldn’t classify it as revenge. It is an integral part of football, and that particular outcome played a significant role in my personal growth as a player.” Son had scored his team’s only goal in the 2015 final, which ended in the same scoreline as Friday’s match.

Clearly, it was yet another theatrical performance, and we are overjoyed and exhilarated to have successfully made it through. The battle against Australia was indeed a tough one, as we had anticipated. However, to endure another 120 minutes of play, I am immensely proud of this team and their unwavering determination,” expressed Klinsmann.

“It is undeniably devastating and highly emotional for both the players and staff to witness how the game concluded. We displayed commendable performance throughout the initial 90 minutes until we conceded the penalty,” shared Graham Arnold, the head coach of Australia.

During the group stage, South Korea had a 2-2 draw against their semifinal rivals, Jordan. The rematch between the two teams is scheduled to take place next Tuesday.
