Twinkle Khanna has penned an account of her son Aarav’s transition into adulthood, expressing a sense of futility as he gains greater autonomy at the age of 21.
Twinkle Khanna assumes various roles, encompassing that of a spouse, entrepreneur, author, and even an interviewer. Nevertheless, one of her most significant roles is that of a mother to her two offspring. In a recent article for The Times Of India, Twinkle openly expressed her exasperation at witnessing her son, Aarav Kumar, transition into adulthood and how she now grapples with a sense of “uselessness” as he requires personal space and boundaries.
Within her article, Twinkle recounted a moment that served as a realization that her son had indeed matured. A call from a health insurance agent inquiring about her health insurance policy and her 21-year-old son Aarav’s medical appointments. She was taken aback when the agent refused to disclose any information regarding Aarav, citing his status as an adult and emphasizing the importance of his privacy.
Hailing from an Indian family where the notion of privacy between parents and children may appear unfamiliar, Twinkle made the decision to approach Aarav, requesting access to his account password. However, his immediate response was a resolute refusal, asserting, “I am not providing you with my password. I am 21, not 12; I am capable of managing my own affairs.”
Taken aback by her son’s newfound independence, Twinkle sought counsel from her spouse, Akshay Kumar, who attempted to assuage her concerns by emphasizing her obligations to their younger daughter, Nitara, and her demanding professional commitments. Nevertheless, it was Twinkle’s mother, esteemed actress Dimple Kapadia, who offered her a valuable perspective. Dimple recounted an incident from a red carpet event, during which she attempted to style Twinkle’s hair, only to be rebuffed by her daughter, who insisted on doing it herself. Dimple reminded Twinkle of the counsel she had once imparted to her own mother, stating, “Were you not the one who once opined that unsolicited advice amounts to nothing more than interference?”
Twinkle concluded her column by affirming her commitment to internalizing her own counsel and embracing the forthcoming chapter in her son’s life, while also acknowledging the necessity of relinquishing control. She underscored the significance of parents transitioning into the role of companions rather than excessively monitoring their grown-up offspring, as these emerging adults require supportive friendships rather than overbearing parental figures.
On the 15th of September, the author commemorated Aarav’s birthday. She composed a splendid message for him, which stated, “At the age of 21, you have reached the threshold of adulthood! Nurturing a child is akin to constructing a house and meticulously designing each room. One strives to do their utmost, and eventually, the time arrives to relinquish the house to its rightful owner, who will rearrange the furniture according to their preferences and assume responsibility for the expenses as well. Happy birthday, my dear son, and may your unwavering benevolence continue to bring joy to all those acquainted with you.”
